Iowa Representative Zach Nunn’s Stand on Affordable Care Act
Recently, Iowa Representative Zach Nunn voted in favor of reinstating tax credits under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), despite his ongoing intention to dismantle the healthcare program entirely.
Following the expiration of these credits on January 1, over 126,000 residents in Iowa have experienced increased insurance premiums. Nunn, along with 16 other Republican House members facing challenging reelection campaigns, supported a Democratic initiative to extend these credits for an additional three years. The bill was passed in the House on January 8 with 230 votes but faces slim prospects in the Republican-dominated Senate.
During a GOP meeting in Urbandale on January 28, Nunn stated, “Let me be very clear, I’m not in favor of the ACA going forward. I want the ACA gone as much as any of you. But I’m not going to leave 126,000 Iowans to wait for Congress to get its job done.” He emphasized that Republicans have legislation ready to terminate Obamacare immediately.
The discontinuation of ACA tax credits is projected to affect approximately 22 million Americans, who will face the dilemma of higher premiums, reduced coverage, or foregoing insurance altogether. This situation is exacerbated by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB) from the previous year, which is set to cut up to $1 trillion from Medicaid over ten years, potentially leaving 15 million Americans without health insurance by 2035. The savings are intended to fund tax reductions for affluent individuals and large corporations.
Nunn endorsed the OBBB and later promoted the legislation in television advertisements celebrating the act.
Critics, such as Unrig Our Economy, argue that Nunn’s position on the ACA reflects his underlying priorities. Leor Tal, the group’s director, stated, “Nunn and his Republican colleagues voted for the largest cuts to health care in history in order to give more tax breaks to billionaires. Now, they’re doubling down on attacking Americans’ care by trying to dismantle the ACA. Americans don’t need higher costs and more barriers to coverage, they need Republicans in Congress to stop voting to take away their health care.”
Public sentiment appears to align with this perspective, as a KFF tracking poll indicates a 58% approval rating for the ACA as of January 2026.
Nunn is currently seeking a third term amid identification by Democrats as one of the most vulnerable Republican incumbents up for reelection.
