Religious Leaders Unite Against Attack on Jewish Ambulances in London

In a show of solidarity, Christian leaders have condemned the recent firebombing of four ambulances run by a Jewish charity in Golders Green, London. The attack, which took place early Monday, involved three suspects and has been linked to antisemitic motives.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has denounced the attack as an “abhorrent crime” and committed to addressing the rise in antisemitism that has instilled fear in the Jewish community across Britain.

Responsibility for the arson has been claimed by Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiyya, a group aligned with Iran, through an unverified post on their Telegram channel, according to the BBC.

Metropolitan Police chief Sir Mark Rowley stated that authorities are “pursuing all lines of enquiry,” with counter-terrorism officers involved. However, the incident is currently being considered a hate crime rather than a terror act.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dame Sarah Mullally, expressed her support for the Jewish community, stating, “My prayers are with the Jewish community after the appalling antisemitic attack on Hatzola ambulances in Golders Green. Such acts of violence, hatred and intimidation have no place in our society.”

Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell also condemned the attack, calling it “a completely abhorrent and unjustifiable attack on the Jewish community and on all who are engaged in health care in this country.” He emphasized the importance of standing against prejudice and violence.

Echoing these sentiments, the Catholic Archbishop of Westminster, Richard Moth, called for widespread unity and respect. “I am shocked at the vandalism of Jewish charity Hatzola’s ambulances that serve the community in North London and condemn any attacks on faith communities,” he said.

The North London neighborhood of Golders Green, known for its significant Jewish population, has been served by the volunteer-run Hatzola charity since 1979. The charity’s ambulances are vital to the community’s healthcare services.

Addressing the incident, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the attack as horrifying. “The antisemitic arson attack in Golders Green is horrifying. I’ve been in touch with Jewish community leaders this morning and will continue to do so throughout the day. An attack on our Jewish community is an attack on us all. We will fight the poison that is antisemitism,” he said.
