However, it noted “a broader and well-documented pattern of allegations concerning the abduction, forced conversion, and marriage of girls from religious minority communities, particularly Christians and Hindus”.
Minority communities often encounter significant legal and societal obstacles in pursuing justice, with judicial decisions frequently favoring the accused abductors.
Lord Alton, Co-Chair of the APPG, emphasized, “The protection of children and the safeguarding of religious minorities are fundamental principles recognised across all legal systems. Allegations of forced marriage and conversion, particularly involving minors, demand the highest level of scrutiny, transparency, and sensitivity to ensure that justice is both done and seen to be done.”
The APPG urged the Pakistani authorities to thoroughly investigate all claims of forced marriage, especially those involving minors, and to enforce the relevant laws firmly.
Furthermore, the group called for enhanced international collaboration to bolster protections for religious minorities in Pakistan.
Additionally, the APPG addressed the plight of Christian communities facing potential evictions from shanty towns, highlighting the challenges of poverty and discrimination in the housing market, which leave many without viable alternatives.
