The sound of music will soon resonate through Gloucester Cathedral in a special way as the Organ Festival marks the debut of a brand new organ. Running from June 13 to 15, the festival is poised to be a “celebration of music for all,” featuring an array of performances that highlight the instrument’s capabilities.

Speaking on the significance of the event, Andrew Zihni, Dean of the Cathedral, expressed, “This year’s Organ Festival is a thrilling highlight of the Cathedral’s Year of Music, celebrating the unveiling of the magnificent new organ, an instrument built to lift hearts and inspire generations to come in worship and wonder.”
The festival will gather world-renowned performers and the local community to showcase the organ’s versatility, signaling a new era in the Cathedral’s storied musical tradition. Zihni added, “We look forward to welcoming all who can attend this special occasion.”
A key attraction of the festival will be the Gala Concert on June 13, featuring the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under the baton of Adrian Partingdon, Gloucester Cathedral’s Director of Music. The following day, the new organ’s vast capabilities will be on full display during a recital by acclaimed pianist and organist, Wayne Marshall.
However, this celebration comes amidst concerning trends for traditional church organs. The charity Pipe Up has raised alarms, predicting that the organ could become virtually extinct in Britain by 2070. The group reports that approximately 400 church organs are either scrapped or fall into disuse every year.
Historical data suggests a sharp decline in the number of pipe organs in Britain, plummeting from 40,000 in 1915 to about 15,000 today. Of these remaining instruments, only half are considered playable, and even fewer are regularly used. In many cases, organs that are preserved from destruction find new homes abroad.
