Recent developments in Washington have sparked a heated debate as President Trump has decided to postpone the confirmation of his chosen director of national intelligence. Instead, he has appointed Bill Pulte in an interim capacity. This action has been met with criticism from Democratic senators, notably Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan.

Slotkin, who has a background as a CIA analyst, voiced her concerns on NPR’s Morning Edition. She questioned the president’s reasons for placing Pulte in this role, suggesting that Trump’s intent is for Pulte to manipulate the intelligence community to further his assertions regarding the 2020 election.

Slotkin also highlighted Pulte’s prior responsibilities in federal housing programs, alleging that he misused access to government data to go after individuals perceived as adversaries by the president. “The idea that he won’t do the exact same thing in the DNI office, but with more tools, is just folly,” she remarked.

Known for her frequent critiques of the president, Slotkin also condemned Trump’s threat to hinder the reauthorization of a segment of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). She described this maneuver as “cutting off your nose to spite your face.”

Emphasizing the importance of safeguarding against international dangers, Slotkin stated, “The president’s primary responsibility is to protect against foreign threats. As someone who was a CIA analyst and wrote the presidential daily brief for the president on the topics I was covering, this is important information to get right.”
