Rep. Ashley Hinson’s Fundraising Efforts Lead to Missed House Votes
Rep. Ashley Hinson of Iowa was absent for several crucial votes in the House due to her engagement in fundraising activities for her U.S. Senate campaign.
On June 24, the House Appropriations Committee conducted a vote on 11 amendments related to the 2027 Defense Appropriations bill, which allocates funds for the Pentagon and associated defense initiatives for the coming fiscal year. Hinson, a member of this committee, was absent for seven of these votes.
According to an email from Grand Valley Consulting, a firm that provides advice to Republican candidates, Hinson had a fundraising luncheon scheduled with Sen. Shelly Moore Capito of West Virginia on the same day. Entry to the event required tickets priced between $1,000 and $2,500.
The progressive media outlet MidasTouch shared a video online capturing Hinson’s arrival at the event during the ongoing votes.
The votes Hinson missed addressed various national security issues, such as defense spending allocations, the suggested reduction of U.S. troops in Europe, and modifications to the eligibility criteria for military officer promotions.
Hinson has faced criticism for seemingly prioritizing her Senate campaign over her congressional responsibilities. Despite pledging increased engagement, she has not conducted a single town hall meeting with her constituents this year, focusing instead on campaign-related events.
Hinson is contending to succeed retiring Republican Sen. Joni Ernst, with Democratic state Rep. Josh Turek as her opponent in the upcoming general election.
A recent New York Times/Siena University poll indicated that Hinson holds a slight 2-point advantage over Turek.
The original report titled Hinson missed key House votes while fundraising for Senate campaign was published by American Journal News.
