Billionaire Governor Candidate Advocates for Stricter Abortion Laws in Georgia
Billionaire Rick Jackson, currently campaigning for the governorship of Georgia, has claimed responsibility for the state’s existing abortion ban and expressed his willingness to endorse even more stringent measures. His comments were made during a meet-and-greet event held on March 21 in Martinez, where he addressed a voter’s inquiry about his stance on a “total abortion ban.”
Jackson stated, “What we have in place, I’m not going to change it,” further indicating that he would support efforts for stricter regulations, saying, “If anybody wants to do that, I would absolutely confirm it.”
The current law in Georgia bans abortion after six weeks of pregnancy — a period before many women realize they are pregnant. Although exceptions are available for cases of rape, incest, and medical emergencies, advocates argue that proving these circumstances can be challenging. In 2022, two women lost their lives due to the ban’s restrictions on receiving necessary medical care for pregnancy complications.
In a separate incident in March, a Georgia woman faced murder charges after terminating a pregnancy beyond the 6-week limit using abortion medication obtained online. The legal proceedings for this case are still underway.
Jackson, a significant political donor, took pride in his role in advancing the 6-week abortion ban, stating, “I think we’ve made really good progress on this issue with the 6-weeks. I’m real pleased that I was a part of that behind the scenes.”
Despite Jackson’s position, public opinion may not align with his views. A 2025 survey by Change Research showed that 61% of Georgia voters believe abortion should remain legal in most cases. Furthermore, nearly 70% indicated support for legislation safeguarding access to abortion care and birth control.
Jackson is one of several candidates in the Republican primary, facing competition from Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. The Democratic contenders include former Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan and former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. The primary election is slated for May 19.
