Belgium Ends U.S. World Cup Run with Convincing Victory
The U.S. men’s national team faced a disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 4-1 defeat to Belgium in Seattle. Despite high expectations, home advantage, and a star-studded lineup led by acclaimed coach Mauricio Pochettino, the Americans were unable to make it past the Round of 16.

Despite a promising start to the tournament, with victories over Paraguay, Australia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina, the U.S. was outmatched by the Belgian side. The game began with Belgium quickly taking the lead, capitalizing on U.S. errors and turnovers.
Belgian forward Charles De Ketelaere was instrumental, scoring two first-half goals. Although U.S. midfielder Malik Tillman briefly equalized, Belgium soon regained the lead. The second half saw Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku extend Belgium’s lead, resulting in the final 4-1 scoreline.

The match was marked by off-the-field drama involving U.S. striker Folarin Balogun. Initially suspended due to a red card in the previous match, Balogun was allowed to play after a last-minute decision by FIFA, reportedly following a call from President Trump to FIFA president Gianni Infantino. Despite the controversy, U.S. defender Tim Ream stated that it did not affect the team’s focus.
Coach Mauricio Pochettino commented, “Today we didn’t show our real quality,” while midfielder Tyler Adams reflected, “Tonight was not a good performance overall. It’s not what we look to achieve.”
As Belgium prepares to face Spain in the quarterfinals, the U.S. team is left to ponder what went wrong, hoping to build on their strengths for future competitions.
