UK and Global Leaders Criticize Israeli Actions in the West Bank
A recent statement from the UK and international leaders has drawn attention to escalating tensions in the West Bank, which are attributed to Israeli policies. This development has received backing from the Catholic Church in England and Wales.
The statement highlights the worsening situation in the West Bank, citing Israeli attempts to assert more control as detrimental to both regional stability and the possibility of achieving a two-state resolution. The document also notes that violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers has reached “unprecedented levels.”
Christian Palestinians have been among those affected by this violence, with the town of Taybeh experiencing multiple assaults that have disrupted local livelihoods. Despite denunciations from Israeli authorities, there have been no arrests related to these incidents.
A focal point of the statement is the contentious “E1 area,” a four square mile region that connects East Jerusalem with the Israeli settlement of Ma’ale Adumim. Control over this land by Israel could effectively bifurcate the West Bank, which the statement argues would constitute “a serious breach of international law.”
In addition to the UK, the statement received support from leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, and the European Union.
Bishop Jim Curry, representing the Catholic Church in England and Wales, expressed his support for the statement, sharing his own “deeply disturbing and intimidating” experiences with Israeli settlers during a visit to the West Bank.
“I add my voice to Church leaders and all who want the Government of Israel to end its expansion of settlements and for the government to prevent such expansion. The Israeli government also needs to ‘respect the Hashemite custodianship over Christian and Muslim Holy Sites, the historic status quo arrangements, and lift financial restrictions on the PA and the Palestinian economy,'” he stated.
“As a Church leader I stand with those who continue to oppose further illegal annexation and the forcible displacement of Palestinians.”
