The recent tragic event in Mozambique has left a void in the hearts of many as African Christian leaders demand a comprehensive inquiry into the shocking murder of Bishop Osório Citora Afonso. The bishop, a prominent figure in the Diocese of Quelimane, was fatally shot at his residence on June 6, igniting calls for justice and highlighting concerns over religious freedom and safety.
Bishop Afonso was attacked in the early hours at his home in Quelimane, located in the eastern part of Mozambique. The perpetrators remain unidentified, and the motive behind the attack is still unclear, according to a report by Aid to Christians in Need (ACN).
The assassination has drawn widespread condemnation from church leaders across Africa. The Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) has been vocal, urging Mozambican authorities to swiftly apprehend those accountable.
SECAM’s statement was unequivocal: “This heinous act, committed against a pastor of God’s people, constitutes not only an attack on the life and dignity of a devout servant of the Gospel, but also an assault on the fundamental values of peace, justice, human dignity, and religious freedom – essential principles for the well-being and development of any society.”
The organization emphasizes that religious leaders, dedicated to fostering unity and serving communities, should be shielded from violence. The sanctity of religious freedom, a cornerstone of democratic societies, must be upheld.
SECAM has called for a prompt, transparent, and independent investigation, asserting, “The people of Mozambique, the Catholic Church, and the International Community deserve the truth.”
Bishop Afonso, aged 54, was a respected figure in both Mozambican and international Catholic circles. The National Criminal Investigation Service revealed that the attackers breached the property by scaling the perimeter wall and disabling the security system, subsequently shooting the bishop in the chest with AK-M assault rifles in a corridor of his residence.
Ordained in 2002, Bishop Afonso’s ecclesiastical career included a tenure at the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelisation. In 2023, he assumed the role of auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Maputo and later became Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira.
The bishop’s untimely death has triggered an outpouring of grief among Catholics not only in Mozambique but also globally. During a recent visit to Spain on June 7, Pope Leo XIV expressed his sorrow over the loss, offering prayers for the community of Mozambique and the Diocese of Quelimane, and calling for an end to violence.
The assassination occurs amidst ongoing instability in parts of Mozambique, where since 2017, an Islamist insurgency in the north has led to numerous casualties and displaced over a million individuals. However, no connection has been suggested between this unrest and the bishop’s murder.
Investigations are still ongoing as the search for answers continues.
