Fire Engulfs Historic Kyiv Cathedral Amid Intense Missile Strikes

Overnight missile and drone strikes in Kyiv have left the historical Dormition Cathedral, a part of the UNESCO-listed Pechersk Lavra monastery complex, engulfed in flames. This incident is one of the latest in a series of intense aerial attacks on Ukraine’s capital.
The assault marked one of the heaviest bombardments in recent weeks, with numerous missiles and drones targeting locations throughout Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine, according to local authorities.
Firefighters were engaged in efforts to control the blaze at the 11th-century cathedral, a significant symbol of Orthodox Christian heritage in Eastern Europe and one of Ukraine’s most venerated religious sites.
Footage revealed firefighters battling flames and smoke that had overtaken the cathedral’s roof.
Reports from Ukrainian officials indicate that several individuals lost their lives in Kyiv, with additional casualties reported nationwide as strikes affected various regions.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks, while Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko described them as a “brutal assault on our people and our heritage.” Ukraine is appealing to Western nations for increased air defense assistance and heightened diplomatic pressure on Moscow.
Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, declared, “We will be urgently initiating all relevant procedures within UNESCO and all other international mechanisms, demanding immediate and adequate responses to this state barbarism.”
He further emphasized, “We expect strong reactions by international institutions and capitals. No vague words, silence, or weak steps. We need action now to stop Russian barbarism.”
The Ukrainian Embassy in Belgium reported that the cathedral fire extended over approximately 800 square meters.
“Targeting the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is an unforgivable attack on Ukraine’s cultural and spiritual heritage and on a site of outstanding value to humanity. We expect a strong response from the international community,” stated the embassy.
Russia has consistently denied intentionally targeting cultural or civilian sites. On Monday, it reiterated its position, attributing some of the damage to Ukrainian air defense activities rather than direct strikes on religious infrastructure.
Established in 1051, the Pechersk Lavra complex is one of Ukraine’s most significant religious locations and has held a UNESCO World Heritage Site status since 1990. Although it has faced damage during the ongoing conflict, this fire is one of the most severe incidents affecting the cathedral since the war began.
Now in its fourth year, the conflict continues to see repeated long-range attacks on Ukrainian cities, with Kyiv frequently targeted by missiles and drones.
