In a prestigious recognition of its cultural significance, Gloucester Cathedral has been awarded the title of “Cultural Venue of the Year” at the SoGlos Gloucestershire Lifestyle and Community Awards 2026. This accolade highlights the cathedral’s vital role as a hub of cultural activities, ranging from concerts and festivals to exhibitions and family events.
Currently hosting a “Year of Music,” Gloucester Cathedral has been a consistent recipient of Gold or Highly Commended awards for the past four years, underscoring its enduring impact on the community. A key highlight of the “Year of Music” is the Organ Festival, which celebrates the inauguration of the cathedral’s new organ.
Scheduled from June 13-15, the festival is poised to captivate audiences with events such as the Gala Concert on June 13. This concert will feature the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, under the baton of Gloucester Cathedral’s Director of Music, Adrian Partingdon.
With a storied history that spans over 1,300 years, Gloucester Cathedral is renowned for its gothic architecture and historical significance, including being the resting place of Edward II, who passed away at Berkeley Castle in 1327. Additionally, the cathedral’s cloisters have served as iconic backdrops in several Harry Potter films.
The Very Rev Andrew Zihni, Dean of Gloucester Cathedral, expressed his gratitude for the award, stating, “To be recognised as Gloucestershire’s Best Cultural Venue is a wonderful affirmation of the work of our whole Cathedral community and an encouragement to us to continue offering the very best in worship, music and heritage to all who come through our doors – whether to pray, to explore or simply to wonder.”
Lisa Wiltshire, a dedicated volunteer at the cathedral, emphasized the role of culture in community building, saying, “Culture has such a powerful role in bringing people together, helping wellbeing and creating a sense of belonging, so it’s incredibly rewarding to see the impact we can have through shared experiences and creativity.
