Ann Widdecombe Memorial Plans Announced Amid Ongoing Investigation

The family of Ann Widdecombe has revealed plans for a public memorial to be held later this year. The former Conservative minister, who was also a spokeswoman for Reform UK, tragically passed away at her home in Haytor, Devon, on July 9, with police describing the investigation as “complex.”

In a recent court appearance, 28-year-old Joshua Kerry from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, faced charges of her murder. He is accused of striking Widdecombe 21 times with a hammer. Kerry has not yet entered a plea and remains in custody following a denial of bail.

Private and Public Memorials

The Widdecombe family announced a private service for close friends and family, alongside a public memorial scheduled for a later date. “We understand that there is significant public interest in the funeral of Ann Widdecombe,” they stated. “A private service for family and close friends will be held in the coming weeks, and invitations for this ceremony have been distributed. A more public memorial will follow later in the year, the details of which will be released in due course. While we are very grateful for the wide expression of condolences, the family would ask that this initial service is limited to those closest to Ann.”

As of now, the specific date and venue for the public memorial have not been announced.

Ann Widdecombe, a devout Catholic, began her political career as the Conservative MP for Maidstone in 1987 and later served as prisons minister in the 1990s. She transitioned to become an MEP for the Brexit Party and was serving as Reform UK’s spokeswoman on immigration and justice at the time of her death.

Known for her strong beliefs in the right to life, religious freedom, and free speech, Widdecombe once famously told Oxford students that no one has the right to not be offended. Despite her sometimes controversial opinions, she became a beloved public figure through appearances on shows like Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother.
