Controversy Over Proposed Conversion Therapy Ban Sparks Concerns
Recent government plans to ban ‘conversion therapy’ have ignited a debate, with voices from various religious organizations cautioning against potential overreach that might affect parental rights and religious freedoms.
The Evangelical Alliance has emphasized its opposition to forced attempts to change a person’s sexuality, highlighting that present laws already offer protection against such coercion.
Concerns are growing that the draft proposals, released on Thursday, could be interpreted broadly enough to criminalize parental conversations with their children or similar discussions in church communities.
The Christian Institute has echoed these concerns, stating in a previous argument that implementing a ban could infringe on free speech rights, a factor contributing to the Conservative Party’s earlier decision to abandon their ban efforts.
Additionally, the Free Speech Union warns that the ban may adversely impact free speech, potentially hindering healthcare professionals and parents from engaging in open discussions with children experiencing gender confusion.
Peter Lynas, UK director of the Evangelical Alliance, expressed grave concerns regarding the draft, stating, “The proposed conversion practice legislation is deeply concerning and is underpinned by the threat of up to five years in prison.”
“The proposals fundamentally undermine the role of parents and carers while also ignoring freedom of religion and belief. The definition of abusive practices is entirely subjective and could leave a wide range of people at risk of prosecution even years later,” he added.
Simon Calvert, Deputy Director of the Christian Institute, questioned the draft’s quality, saying, “After eight years and five Prime Ministers, is this the best draft they can come up with? The Bill would see parents, professionals and pastors having to answer to the police for innocent conversations that trans activists claim are ‘abusive’. It’s wide open to misuse.”
Suella Braverman MP criticized the proposals for potentially penalizing “desperate parents” attempting to safeguard their children from “transgender ideology and puberty blockers.”
She shared, “I’ve met families in tears because their adult child regrets their decision and wants to reverse the mastectomy and effects of testosterone on their voice,” on X.
Braverman further stated, “A conversion therapy ban will criminalise those who love their children. Just for loving their children. I know Starmer is desperate for a legacy but this is shameful.”
