Smartphone Adoption Linked to Decline in US Birth Rate, Study Finds

The pervasive influence of smartphones may have reshaped American demographics in unexpected ways, particularly impacting birth rates. Researchers have proposed that the introduction of the iPhone is linked to a significant decline in births, altering social behaviors and priorities in the process.

According to a working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), the early adoption of smartphones could be responsible for 33% to 52% of the decrease in the US general fertility rate between 2007 and 2011.

This study, conducted by economist Caitlin K Myers of Middlebury College and researcher Ezekiel Hooper, contributes to ongoing discussions about the factors behind the sustained drop in US birth rates following the economic recovery.

The analysis reveals that since 2007, the general fertility rate has declined by approximately 22%, with no universally accepted economic cause identified.

In their paper titled ‘Is the iPhone Birth Control?’, Myers and Hooper argue that an effective explanation must be “big,” “dated,” and “broadly distributed” across various demographic groups.

Building on previous studies that suggested smartphones, email, and social media have shifted generational priorities, the authors examined whether the advent of smartphones could have tangibly affected birth rates.

Leveraging what economists term “a natural experiment,” they explored the effects of the iPhone’s exclusive release on AT&T’s network from its launch in June 2007 until February 2011.

Counties with high AT&T coverage had access to iPhones earlier than those with limited coverage. Comparing regions with over 90% coverage to those with under 10%, the researchers found more significant birth rate declines where smartphone access was higher.

Their findings suggest that early iPhone access correlated with a 4.5% to 8% decrease in births among women aged 15 to 19, and a 3.2% to 6.6% decrease among women aged 20 to 24.

Although smaller, noticeable reductions were also present in older age groups.

Overall, the study estimates that smartphone adoption accounts for a substantial portion of the decline in the US general fertility rate during the years studied.

Interestingly, the effects were similarly observed among white and Hispanic women, while the study noted no significant impact on black women, a result they admit complicates the broader smartphone diffusion narrative.

The research also found consistent declines across marital statuses and parity, though educational attainment showed some variation. The decline ranged from 2.1% among college graduates to 5.8% among women with partial college education.

To ensure their findings weren’t merely reflecting differences in mobile network coverage, the researchers conducted placebo tests using Verizon and Sprint networks before 2011, when neither offered the iPhone.

They discovered no similar declines until Android smartphones became available on those networks, supporting the notion that smartphones broadly, not just iPhones, contributed to the observed trends.

The paper does not claim smartphones directly affect biological fertility; instead, it posits behavioral changes like reduced in-person socializing, better access to contraceptive information, and increased online pornography consumption as possible factors.

Myers and Hooper emphasize that these mechanisms are not causally verified but align with evidence of reduced social interaction, declining sexual activity, increased contraceptive use, and rising online pornography interest during the study period.

The researchers propose that if smartphones have indeed changed how relationships and social interactions form, policymakers might need to reevaluate strategies to counter declining birth rates.

They point out that conventional pronatalist policies such as financial incentives and childcare support “do raise fertility, but modestly and at steep cost.”

If changing relationships are more to blame than economic factors, current policies might be misdirected.

“The operative margin may be less about the cost of raising a child and more about whether the relationships and sexual activity that produce children are forming at all,” the researchers noted.

While they acknowledge the challenges in isolating the effect of smartphone ownership, they conclude: “We do not claim that the iPhone is the sole cause of the post-2007 decline, nor that no policy lever can move the trajectory. But over the 2008–2011 window that our design identifies, our estimates imply that the introduction of the modern smartphone played a sizable role in the decline in US births.”

The study has sparked discussion among other scholars.

Dr Alison Gemmill, an epidemiologist at UCLA, told CNN that while smartphones likely influenced relationship patterns, they did so alongside other significant changes in housing costs, education, labor markets, gender norms, and social life, making it difficult to separate these factors.

Dr Sarah Hayford, a sociologist at Ohio State University, also speaking to CNN, questioned whether a technology introduced in 2007 could explain a long-term decline in fertility, pointing to increased access to long-lasting contraception as another critical element.
